Holiday lighting is one of the few home projects where timing matters as much as taste. In Pinellas County the weather cooperates almost all December, which means the homes that look best are simply the ones that planned earliest.
October: clean first, decorate second
This is the step everyone skips. Lights highlight whatever is behind them, so grimy soffits, algae streaks on the walkway and hazy windows show up more once the house is lit, not less.
Order of operations that actually works:
- Exterior window cleaning, including sills and frames
- Pressure washing the driveway, walkway and entry
- Gutter cleaning, since clips and lines often run along that edge
- Then lights
Cleaning after lights go up is awkward, slower and sometimes not possible without taking sections down.
Early November: plan the layout
Decide what you are outlining — rooflines, columns, palms, walkway edges — and count your runs before buying. A few practical notes for coastal homes:
- Choose outdoor-rated warm white or a single accent color; mixed colors read as clutter from the street.
- Salt air is hard on cheap clips and connectors. Buy better ones once.
- Plan your power. One overloaded outlet is the most common reason a display goes dark mid-December.
Mid-to-late November: install
Thanksgiving weekend is the sweet spot. Cooler mornings, dry days and enough time to fix anything that does not light before the neighborhood is fully decorated.
Never work a ladder on wet grass or reach off the side of it. Second-story rooflines and steep pitches are the most common source of holiday injuries in Florida homes — if a section makes you nervous, leave it dark or get help.
December: enjoy it, and keep the glass clear
Clean windows do a lot of quiet work here. Interior tree lights and candles read beautifully from the street through clean glass and look muddy through a film of dust and salt.
January: takedown and reset
Take lights down within the first couple of weeks so clips and adhesive do not bake into another Florida summer. Store runs coiled and labeled by section — next year takes half the time.
